The Rock Imperium festival is held in Cartagena (Spain) from June 19 to 22 on the large lawn of the Cuesta del Batel park, next to an 18th century wall and a few meters from the Mediterranean Sea. Gastronomy, museums and beaches are also the attractions that Cartagena offers to festival attendees.
Cartagena is an ancient city where, thanks to Rock Imperium, rock and heavy metal legends such as Europe, Scorpions, Kiss and Judas Priest have triumphed. The latter, who perform this Wednesday, June 19, are the headliner of this third edition of the festival.
Before them, the Carthaginian general Hannibal Barca and the Roman general Publius Cornelius Scipio also triumphed in Cartagena. Both led both sides of one of the most intense battles in the Mediterranean, the Punic Wars, which were fought in Cartagena years before Christ. Every September this battle is recreated by hundreds of people in the same park where the Rock Imperium is celebrated with the Carthaginian and Roman festivals.
FROM THE ROMAN THEATER TO THE FIRST SUBMARINE
The Romans won and founded Carthago Nova, the current Cartagena. From there began a period of splendor in the city, which can be visited today. Cartagena has the most visited museums in the Region of Murcia open to the public. These are the Roman Theater, as well as museums such as the Roman Forum Quarter or the Augusteum. In addition, you can also learn about the contemporary history of the city in museums such as the Civil War Refuge, the National Museum of Underwater Archeology (ARQVA) or the Naval Museum. In the latter is the first electric propulsion submarine, manufactured by Isaac Peral from Cartagena. All the information about the museums of Cartagena www.puertodeculturas.cartagena.es
Cartagena is also a museum in itself that can be seen in a simple flat walk. Walking through the historic center you can see emblematic modernist buildings, such as the Town Hall Palace or the Casino on Mayor street. In addition, there are also military buildings in operation today, such as the Arsenal, submarine base of the Spanish Navy. The new submersibles are being manufactured today in the Cartagena shipyards.
As an example of Cartagena's military legacy, there are countless castles and military fortresses that defend the city. They can be reached through paths that run along the sea. The port of Cartagena is flanked by the castles of Galeras and San Julián, and the batteries of La Podadera and Cala Cortina.
BEACH, 5 MINUTES FROM THE FESTIVAL
Cala Cortina is the urban beach of Cartagena, a place with crystal-clear waters and quiet bathing that is located a short walk from the Rock Imperium festival site. To get to the beach more comfortably you can use public transportation. The Beach Bus connects the city of Cartagena with Cala Cortina and El Portús beach. The latter, located in the western area of Cartagena, has a naturist bathing area. More information about bus line 12 at www.cartagena.es. In addition, Cartagena has unique beaches, further away from the city: La Azohía, La Manga, Cabo de Palos or the Calblanque natural park. More information on the website www.turismo.cartagena.es
CALDERO RICE, MARINERAS, ASIAN COFFEE...
Cartagena's Mediterranean cuisine is one of the city's great attractions. Flavors such as caldero rice, crespillos, michirones, marineras and Asiático coffee shine in it. Cartagena's gastronomic offer has Michelin Star restaurants and countless bars, cafes and restaurants highlighted with soles and soles from the Repsol Guide.
