Cartagena ascends to the olympus of heavy metal with Judas Priest on the first day of the Rock Imperium festival. The British band offers an excellent concert at Cuesta del Batel before more than 13,000 fans from 45 countries at the close of their tour through Spain. This tour has served to present the Birmingham band's latest work, 'Invincible Shield'. The metal audience has also chanted hits from the group led by the legendary Rob Halford, chanting songs like 'Breaking the Law' or 'Painkiller'. Judas Priest thus proves to be the true gods of the metal genre after more than 50 years of live music.
The concert by this Rock Imperium headliner is just the beginning of three more days of the festival. Until Saturday, June 22, there are live shows from more than forty international rock and heavy metal bands. Big names gather in Cartagena: such as the British Saxon, the virtuoso Yngwie Malmsteen, Doro reviving the story of Warlock or the legendary Uriah Heep and Glenn Hughes, among many others. All Rock Imperium schedules and programming can be consulted on the festival website.
The mayor, Noelia Arroyo, also attended this first day of Rock Imperium as an audience, in which Extreme, Eclipse, Uriah Heep and Ronnie Romero, among others, performed. The mayor has assessed that Cartagena expects the presence of 50,000 spectators. An influx that fills hotels, shops and hospitality venues in Cartagena and the region. This generates an estimated economic impact of €16 million. A lively audience that also fills the city of Cartagena with rock and metal energy dressed in looks dominated by denim jackets full of patches, long hair and t-shirts of bands that have made history in the other two previous editions of Rock Imperium: KISS, Deep Purple, Scorpions, Europe...
Rock Imperium is supported by the Cartagena City Council. This year, as a novelty, the festival has launched a parallel program with free activities and concerts, called 'Side Rock Imperium'. In the Plaza del Rey, next to the Military Arsenal, there will be two free concerts at noon. Both will be at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, June 21, and Saturday, June 22. Two bands from Cartagena will perform. On the first day, rock will sound with electronic excerpts from Scarecrow Avenue. And, the second, the melodic metal rock of Ángel Negro. There are also cinema and literary meetings. The entire program can be consulted online on the festival website.
The festival is held in a city with ancient history, with countless museums and emblematic places, such as the Roman Theater, the Military Arsenal, the Roman Forum Quarter, the National Museum of Underwater Archeology (ARQVA), or port. Cartagena has a beach that can be reached on foot with a walk from the festival site: Cala Cortina. And also a gastronomic offer that includes restaurants with Michelin Stars or soles from the Repsol Guide. It highlights culinary preparations such as arroz caldero, michirones, crespillos, marineras or Asian coffee. PLAYGROUND INSIDE ROCK IMPERIUM
Another improvement of this third edition of Rock Imperium is the opening of a children's playroom. To facilitate reconciliation for parents who attend the festival, this service is opened within the premises where children from 4 to 12 years old can be. Capacity is limited, so you must reserve a place in advance. It will be available for groups from 1:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., from 8:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. and from 11:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. It will not be allowed to leave personal belongings, minors will not be fed. There will be bathroom, shade and water.
BUS AND PARKING
Measures have been taken to improve transportation during the days of the festival. Restrictions on taxis have been lifted, allowing them to operate without limitations to facilitate the transportation of attendees. On the other hand, a shuttle bus will be enabled from the La Rambla Shopping Center, where there is a large free parking area, with tickets for one euro for each journey (2 euros round trip) and the following schedules:
In addition, from June 10 to 28, Line 3 Cartagena-Canteras (Por Tentegorra) will be free for all users during the festival's closure and occupation period to mitigate the impact on the usual parking areas. The service will reinforce frequencies in the bands with maximum influx coinciding with the entry and exit times of the university community according to demand.
And for those looking for sun and beach, they can also use Beach Bus Line 12 that connects Cartagena with the bathing areas of Cala Cortina and El Portús. More information about this paid urban bus line here.
